An intrepid spirit characterizes BMV’s season-opening concert “Breakthroughs.” Mezzo-soprano Krista River joins the ensemble for John Harbison’s Mirabai Songs, a sensual depiction of the rebellious 16th-century Indian poet and mystic Mirabai. In his septet Raising the Gaze, Peter Lieberson takes inspiration from an unusual pairing: Buddhist themes and medieval dance music. An underworld ogre emerges landside in Andy Vores’ darkly-scored Umberhulk. The three Northeast Semi-finalists of the nationwide Rapido!® Composition Contest present the breakthrough results of their intensive 14-day compositional sojourn.
